Omar Must Resist Isiah Thomas Syndrome

By Mike Silva ~ June 23rd, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Great analogy by Brandon Tierney during his morning monologue. He brought up a very good point about the current Mets situation. Right now fans and members of the media are screaming for Omar Minaya to make a move, any move, to beef up the Mets depleted lineup. This would not only be the wrong thing to do, but could be detrimental to the long term health of the organization. Tierney brought up the point how Isiah was never comfortable with inactivity. Think Trevor Ariza for Steve Francis. Imagine Omar trades Bobby Parnell, Daniel Murphy, or Fernando Martinez for the baseball version of Stevie Franchise (think Aubrey Huff, Mark DeRosa, or Nick Johnson). I know what your thinking: you said go after Johnson a month ago! That was before the rest of the team joined Carlos on the disabled list. Personally, I will be judging Omar for his performance during these difficult times versus second guess (what a majority of the fans, mainstream, and independent media will do) the off season’s of 2006 to 2008.

You can criticize Omar for trading away young depth over the years. As a matter of fact, earlier today, I criticized him for letting Darren O’ Day walk in April. Bottom line: there is no amount of depth that can make up for losing 75% of your core, a setup man, and 2/5th of the starting rotation. That is not even an argument, it’s the fact (I just channeled Adam Schein from Loudmouths- forgive me).

Sometimes the best trades are the ones that you don’t make. Omar would be better served putting a study together about his medical staff than overpaying for a complementary part. I will judge the Mets season on how Jerry Manuel gets this group to play hard in the face of adversity. Those that lay down are the ones that you don’t want on this team when the cavalry arrive, or going into next season. Remember the Ron Darling quote from last night about how championship clubhouses embrace these types of situations, not run from it.

Desperate wheeling and dealing threw the Knicks into the abyss. I don’t believe Omar Minaya is capable of that type of ignorant behavior (is any executive for that matter?), but I don’t want to be talking about some of the aforementioned prospects like I have about O’ Day, Jesus Flores, Matt Lindstrom, and Heath Bell. I was told once that worry is “like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but doesn’t get you anywhere”. I think you could say the same about making a trade for the sake of it. Leave the emotional responses to these silly fans that are calling talk radio. Omar’s performance should be about how smart he is over the next few weeks, not how aggressive.
