Mets Bullpen Building Character

By Mike Silva ~ September 2nd, 2008. Filed under: Mike Silva.

I said a few weeks back that the loss of Wagner could help this bullpen step up and become better for the long run. Each night you see guys stepping up and growing into roles. That was essential if the Mets were going to survive the loss of their closer.

Joe Smith and Pedro Feliciano are doing what you would expect, get their situational hitters out. Brian Stokes is emerging as the big arm in the ‘pen. He throws hard and can give you length, a great combination. What can you say about Luis Ayala? Clearly in pain tonight and he grinded through that ninth inning. Even Nelson Figueroa and Duaner Sanchez gave you scoreless innings.

Mike Francesa laughed today at the Mets bullpen. I have to admit this is the most bizarre bullpen I have seen from a contending team. As a matter of fact, I never have seen such a fly by night bullpen in my time watching baseball. One thing you can say about the aforementioned group: they have guts. Something that Mike’s team hasn’t shown this year.

It will be a wild roller coaster ride, buckle up, and continue to enjoy the nightly drama.  This is reality TV so good even SNY can’t botch this programming!
