If Reyes Out Long Term Kiss 09′ Goodbye

Just when you thought it was safe to read a Mets injury report news came out today that Jose Reyes was being sent back to New York for more tests. You have to think this injury is more than just tendinitis.

It doesn’t look promising, despite what Jerry Manuel stated on WFAN, that Reyes will be back for the Philadelphia series. Originally I had thought this team, injuries and all, could be 10 games over .500 at the end of the road trip. Right now I will take 4-3, improved health, and call it a day. Bigger question: What if Reyes is out long term? I am talking about Delgado length? If that is the case you can kiss 2009 goodbye and start to prepare for next year. This team can’t win without Jose Reyes.

The obvious talk is how can the Mets stay with the Phillies if Reyes is out. Don’t even bother trading away valuable chips to fight a losing battle. You have seen, despite his peccadilloes, the Mets offense is not capable of contending without Reyes. Remember, this is the same team trudging out Tim Redding and Livan Hernandez two out of five days. June is the time to take off in a season and, without Reyes, the Mets will be fortunate to tread water.

I don’t want to sound like a defeatist, but Reyes is essential for the Mets to be taken seriously in any playoff discussion. Why trade valuable chips for an inevitable 81-81 finish? It very well could be that a doctor’s visit by Reyes will determine the 2009 season for the New York Mets.
