B-Team, Lets Get Outa Here, Homecoming, Lebron
By Mike Silva ~ May 31st, 2009. Filed under: Morning Digest.
- CC Sabathia won in his homecoming to Cleveland. I looked up some other recent homecomings to compare.
May 6th, 2001 – Mike Mussina @ Baltimore pitched 7 innings for a 2-1 victory.
April 23rd, 2002 – Jason Giambi @ Oakland was 2 for 4.
May 21st, 2004 – A-Rod @ Texas was 2 for 4 with a homer.
May 1st, 2006 – Johnny Damon @ Boston was 0 for 4.
- Not baseball related but Jon Heyman said at his twitter account that there is a lot of scuttlebutt around Yankees players that Lebron is going to be a Knick.
- For the fans that are upset about Jerry Manuel putting out a B-lineup when they are at the game: This isn’t the circus where your guaranteed a performance. Manuel needs to do what is best for his club in the near and long term. It’s the same silly complaint that you would get when Bobby V would sit Piazza for a Sunday game. If you want dancing bears call up Ringling Brothers.
- Angel Hernandez continues to be the most despicable umpire in the league. Even though it probably didn’t impact the outcome of the game (although you never know), he clearly made one of those “let’s get out of here calls” on the Fernando Martinez check swing. Time for the league to serious clean up umpires who are dead wood. Based on my observations you could replace a third of them.
- David Robertson is making the case for the eighth inning. Since his return he has pitched 2.2 scoreless innings. They all have been in low pressure situations. Lets up the ante General Joe! See what you have here.
- Joe Girardi’s bullpen management just drives me crazy. I will stand by my assertion that this will be there undoing this year. On Friday Aceves comes in with the bases loaded to clean up Andy Pettitte’s mess. Just a few nights earlier he goes two innings in a blowout loss. Why waste Aceves in that losing situation? Right now you need to at least try some sort of bullpen configuration. Aceves should be your main guy in close games.
- Important game for the Mets and John Maine today. Finish the home stand 5-1 and you put yourself in great position for a 10-3 stretch. With all the injuries and drama, ten games over .500 entering the Philly series would be a nice position to be in.
- Tim Bontemps does a nice write up in the NY Post about Jesus Montero and Austin Romine. One scout compared Romine’s game to a very well know Yankees rival.
- The Indians are going to need more than midges and mosquitoes this season. That is a dead team. Maybe the Mets and Yanks could pillage the village for some needed parts in the near future.
- Joel Sherman says it’s time for the DH to RIP.
- Howard and I will be doing the Weekly Digest tonight at 8pm. Hear us talk about the Mets catching situation, more on the Yankees bullpen, and all other topics from the week in New York baseball.
