Armando Benitez Returns
By Mike Silva ~ May 20th, 2009. Filed under: Independent Baseball.
I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that former Mets closer Armando Benitez was returning to pitch for the Newark Bears in the independent Atlantic League.
Last night Benitez returned to New York by closing out a 7-3 victory for the Bears over the Long Island Ducks. Going into today’s action Benitez has pitched in 3 games for Newark. Over three innings he has struck out 6 and held opponents to a .167 batting average. Considering his history as a closer you would have to think some major league team will take a flier on him at some point this year. Keith Foulke, another former big league closer, mans the eighth inning.
Newark has what could be the best team in the Atlantic League. Right now they hold the best record at 15-8.

It’s tempting to take the trip out to Newark, or LI next time they play each other, to watch this guy. It would be fun to jeer him at his lowest.

Poor Keith Foulke. Can’t even get a closing job in indy baseball only five short years after getting the save in the final game of the 2004 WS. Time to hang ‘em up, Keith.
