Jim Duquette and the Front Office
By Mike Silva ~ May 22nd, 2009. Filed under: Business of Sports, Mets Alumni.
It’s very easy in this town to sit back and play armchair quarterback. Whether you’re a coach, general manager, or other front office executive your decisions are displayed in front of the entire town.
I decided to see if we can examine further the role of general manager. What are the skill sets neccessary? What about the anatomy of a trade? How do you do business during the craziness of the Winter Meeting and, of course, managing up and down. Former big league general manager Jim Duquette joined us on the show to provide insight into these and other topics.
Jim has been in professional baseball since 1991. He became general manager of the Mets in 2003 and had the responsibility of finding takers for underperforming veterans like Armando Benitez, Jeremy Burnitz, and Roberto Alomar. History was made the following year when he traded top prospect Scott Kazmir to Tampa for Victor Zambrano.
Duquette was vilified for the trade but, during this segment, you will hear the story behind the deal. It’s a lot deeper than simply a baseball trade. He will also discuss the challenges of managing ownerships expectations, how the front office position has evolved, the Carlos Beltran negotiations, who he believes is the best agent in sports, and his new venture with Rick Peterson: 3p Sports.
