If Delgado on DL Would Wily Mo Pena Play First?
By Mike Silva ~ May 2nd, 2009. Filed under: Mets Minors.
If Carlos Delgado is put on the DL I wonder who would get the call? A month ago Nick Evans was the obvious choice but, after a slow start (.098 Batting Average), there is a depth issue at the position. None of the prospects (i.e. Ike Davis) are close to ready, so where does it leave the organization? In comes scrap heap pick up Wily Mo Pena.
Last night, in Buffalo’s 4-3 loss to Louisville, Pena played first base. In eight at bats he is hitting .375 with a homer and three RBI’s. Fernando Tatis has the position covered in New York, but the team is going to need depth. Pena is a failed prospect that is coming off an injury plagued 2008. He is only 26 and can possibly be a late bloomer like you have seen with Carlos Pena in Tampa. Manny Acta had some nice things to say about Pena on Ed Randall’s show last week. Just for the record, Pena only played first base one time before, in 2006 for the Pawtucket Red Sox. He has never manned the position in the majors.
We could criticize Minaya for Jesus Flores and Matt Lindstrom, but when it comes to scrap heap pickups no one seems to be better.
