Freddy Garcia May Retire

Adam Rubin is reporting that Freddy Garcia is contemplating retirement after getting pounded by Syracuse on Monday. According to observers Garcia was topping out at 85 mph.

Originally I thought Garcia would be a great pick up for the fifth slot. It was clear in spring training that he is not the same pitcher since he was injured. He has yet to show any velocity to date. After a weekend where many, including me, were complaining about the Mets giving away Jesus Flores think about this: The Phillies brought in Garcia in 2007 for Gio Gonzalez and Gavin Floyd. Floyd was a 17 game winner last year and would look very nice in a struggling Phillies rotation. Sometimes the short term move, although tempting, doesn’t pay off.

If you remember, the Mets were intersted in Freddy Garcia back in the winter of 2006 but found Kenny Williams asking price too high.
