The Story of Mike Silva

Mike started his media career in 2007 and, unlike other industry professionals, didn’t go to college for media. His experience comes from over a decade in corporate America. He combined his passion for sports, real-world experience and new media acumen to create his own brand.

Mike decided to create New York Baseball Talk in March of 2007. Growing up a huge baseball fan he was a frequent visitor to blogs, message boards and a listener of talk radio. He believed the world of independent media could use a passionate, yet professional, voice that discusses the topics at hand intelligently. He describes himself as being raw and unfiltered, but not inappropriate. The genesis of New York Baseball Talk is having a show that is content-driven, but accountable and entertaining.

What other sports deserves 24/7/365 coverage in this town than baseball? New York Baseball Talk sponsored by Free the Fan launched in March of 2007. The show was all about New York baseball from the independent leagues to the MLB. Never before was there a show that combined journalists, authors, blogs, as well as current and former athletes. It covered current topics, historical retrospectives and New York baseball at all levels.  Mike was not only the host, but he produced and marketed the show, as well.

Mike took the show to the Blog Talk Radio platform in late 2007 as a way to expand his reach across the country. During that time he freelanced with Gotham Sports Media, co-hosting the show “Live from Mickey Mantle’s.”

In July of 2008 he enhanced the radio show to include a social media component. That’s where Mike Silva’s New York Baseball Digest was created. It’s his own independent “digest” of New York baseball where you can listen, read, watch video and interact. Fans were able to enjoy the conversation everywhere, whether through columns and blog spots on nybaseballdigest.com, or the interaction on Twitter and Facebook. Fans were able to listen to the show via Smart Phone app, Blog Talk Radio, or traditional radio (1240 AM WGBB).

Mike and NYBD made national news in December of 2011 when former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker revealed on his radio program that he failed a steroid test while playing in the late-nineties. There were mentions in various newspapers and media outlets, including the New York Daily News.

NYBD had a great run, but the opportunity to expand his reach across multiple sports and media platforms was an opportunity too good to pass up. Mike elected to end his run at NYBD and launched the  Sports Media Watchdog

Sports Media Watchdog delved into the world of media. At SMW he commented on various topics related to sports media in New York and around the country. It was a combination of interviews, short blog posts, unique videos and audio from an outsider who is living in the insider world of media. Each week Mike co-hosted with legendary New York blogger and podcaster Steve Keane. Each week they take on the top topics in sports and media with a New York slant.

SMW ended its run in August of 2013 when Mike took a position with Champions Radio, which is the ESPN affiliate on Long Island (96.9FM & 107.1FM Suffolk County).
