Is the Dillon Gee Show Headed to Phoenix?

By Mike Silva ~ June 11th, 2011. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

Dillon Gee an All Star starter? It’s a bit premature, but after last night’s 8-1 victory over the Pirates Gee is now 7-0, with a 3.05 ERA. The blogosphere continues to be unimpressed with Gee due to the fact he doesn’t light up the gun with a 95mph fastball, or have gaudy advanced metrics (BABIP, xFIP, etc.). But the bottom line is Gee comes to compete every night, and has four pitches that he knows how to use to get hitters out. It’s about substance, not style, with Gee. There are certain pitchers that just know how to win, and Gee appears poised to become one of those types of guys.

He probably has about three starts before Bruce Bochy needs to name the National League pitching staff. The Mets need at least one representative in the All Star Game- Jose Reyes is a shoo-in for that honor- but Gee has an outside shot.

You figure Halladay, Hamels, Lincecum, Kershaw, Jurrjens, and Lincecum are locks. Venters, Wilson, and another reliever from a club with one representative take precedence. What Gee has going for him is he could very well be 10-0 by decision time, which will at least put him in the conversation. We also don’t know which starter will bow out after being selected, so Gee might sneak in through the backdoor.

Right now, the most important thing is Gee is helping the Mets win games. They wouldn’t be sniffing .500 without him. Does anyone remember Chris Young anymore?

Mets fans should just enjoy the “Dillon Gee show” because I think they have themselves a very competent middle of the rotation starter. Who knows, that show might find its way to Chase Field in Arizona for the 2011 All Star Game.

I think Lincecum will get in, but I don’t know about Lincecum.

Last year, Mike Pelfrey had a breakout first half. He wasn’t selected to be an All-Star. Especially with Jose Reyes a likely selection, Gee won’t likely be going. It seems the overall body of work is considered these days, not just a hot start. Bruce Bochy will have lots of pitching choices to pick from PHA, SF, ATL, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see Gee as an All-Star. I just don’t think it’ll happen.
