Benitez and Alfonzo Sign With Newark

By Mike Silva ~ March 26th, 2010. Filed under: Independent Baseball.

The Newark Bears announced the signing of Armando Benitez and Edgardo Alfonzo yesterday.

It’s been 10 years since the duo starred for the NL Pennant winners. Alfonzo last played in the big leagues in 2006. In both 2007 and 2008 he was a member of the Long Island Ducks. Benitez played for the Bears last year and actually was in the Atlantic League All Star Game where he blew a save. I am sure Mets fans are familiar with that story.

Earlier in the spring Marty Noble reported that Alfonzo wanted an opportunity to come to camp with the Mets, but the team declined the offer.

Ten years TO THE DAY? The season started early in 2000, but not that early.
