What Happened to Anderson Hernandez?

By Mike Silva ~ March 16th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

Jon Heyman reported a few days ago that many still believe Ike Davis and Ruben Tejada will start the season in AAA Buffalo. This just days after many speculated that Tejada will replace Jose Reyes at shortstop until he returns from the overactive thyroid. I wrote about how Russ Adams might be a good choice at the position, but a man that has been forgotten is Anderson Hernandez. A better question is what happened to Hernandez who continues to disappoint in the field.

Since returning from Washington last year Hernandez has shown more life with his bat, but his defense has taken a step back. When he was named the starting 2B in 2006 it was his glove that earned him a spot on the opening day roster. Last year he had a -7.9 UZR/150 at shortstop, which is about the same as Alex Cora, who is not exciting anyone on the defensive end.

Hernandez is actually a decent right handed batter as he put up a .733 OPS from that side of the plate in 2009. He hasn’t hurt his cause this spring going 4-9, but history indicates the bat is not good enough to justify his lousy defense.

I am not sure if it’s mental, physical, or a combination of both, but Anderson Hernandez just blew a chance to get some playing time at the big league level.
