Mets/Rockies talking Street

According to a league source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Mets and Rockies are still in talks in regards to the Mets obtaining reliever Huston Street. The source confirms what Joel Sherman posted today in the NY Post that the Mets had offered the Rockies Aaron Heilman for Huston Street, which the Rockies declined. The Rockies then countered with Heilman plus lefty Pedro Feliciano, which the Mets declined, as a source tells NYBD, “The Mets feel Feliciano is not purely a lefty specialist, and think he very well could revert to pre-2008 form.”
Another possibility is that the Mets could include Scott Schoeneweis and possibly some cash with Heilman, but there’s no buzz as to if Colorado is interested in that. The Mets preference is to trade a mid-level prospect, while the Rockies are looking for another big league arm. If nothing else, this shows the Mets do have what it takes to make a Street deal work, and there’s definitely a possibility for this deal to end up occurring during the winter meetings where Omar Minaya and Dan O’Dowd can meet face-to-face. The Mets do not see Street as the choice for closer, but as a set-up guy for either Brian Fuentes or Francisco Rodriguez. They like Street’s ability to close so if something does happen to their closer, they have somebody who is comfortable with the role able to step in. This is definitely something to keep an eye on.
