Interview with Adam Bostick
By Joe DeMayo ~ January 21st, 2009. Filed under: Mets Minors.
I had a chance to catch up with Mets prospect Adam Bostick. If you remember, Bostick was part of the Jason Vargas deal that sent Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens to Florida. Adam took some time to introduce himself to the fans, talk about how he is rehabbing from his injury, and what role he expects to play with the Mets.
JD: I know you had surgery this past year, how is the rehab coming along? Are you going to be good for spring training? Or might you miss time early in the season?
AB Yes I should be ready for spring training. Rehab is going well and I am would say I am about 90%.
JD: This is a while back but, when the Marlins sent you over to the Mets with Jason Vargas for Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens, you were the clear unknown in the deal as Vargas had past major league success. How did you feel about going from a place like Florida, where they were more likely to build from within than go out and buy free agents, to a team like the Mets where they typically(until recently) just go out and fill their needs via FA and trade? Was it at first a little disappointing? Or is it more motivational?
AB: Well it was a little of both knowing that the marlins were going to use their farm system. I really didn’t know too much about the Mets systems and how they worked. The only disappointment for me was leaving the good friendships behind. I was definitely was the unknown player in that trade but I mean you have to make a name for yourself somewhere and hopefully it will be with the Mets this year.
JD: For the Mets fans who don’t know who you are or what you’re about, kind of give a little background on yourself. What you throw, rough velocities if you know, and what is your out pitch etc.
AB: Well I am a 6’1, 215 pound southpaw. I throw 4 seam and 2 seam fastball, change up, and slurve. I am from Greensburg, Pa a small town outside of Pittsburgh. I graduated in 2001 and was drafted out of high school by the Florida Marlins.
JD: Long term: starter or lefty reliever? Any preference?
AB: My answer to this is whatever is going to give me the opportunity to play in the Majors. I’m chasing a dream and I feel so close that it doesn’t matter to me starter or reliever.
JD: Who was your idol growing up? Is there anyone you have tried to model yourself after pitching wise?
AB: My idol growing up was mostly my father. He was a great athlete played 3 sports an excelled at all three. He just was injury plagued an ended up not making it. But growing up all people would say is” your Dutzies boy right? You should have seen your dad play football”. Then other people would tell me how good he was in basketball and baseball. He is the one who got me drafted. He put in long hours working on pitching with me. So my idol is my dad. I also like C.C. Sabathia because of his mound presence and determination. I wouldn’t say I model myself after him or idolize him I just like he goes about his job.
