Mariners Smarten Up; Hire Tango to Crunch Numbers
By Phil Allard ~ January 5th, 2009. Filed under: Phil Allard.
It’s becoming common place now for progressive front offices to hire top-notch sabermetric talent. Bill James and Voros McCracken have worked for the Red Sox. Mike Fishman doodles his algebraic equations for the Yankees, and now the venerable Tom Tango has been hired by The Seattle Mariners.
Up until, say, yesterday, the Mariners were one of the most Pre-Cambrian of organizations. Hiring Tango suggests that they are really trying to turn the page and enter the 21st century. Mariner fans should be elated.
You can check out Tango’s work on Linear Weights, Run Expectancy, and Runs Created here. Tom Tango is also co-author of the influential tome: The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball.
btw–The Yanks’ saber guy, Mike Fishman, is kept under lock and key and does not talk to the media.
