Is Cano Underappreciated?
By Mike Silva ~ October 22nd, 2008. Filed under: Mike Silva.
We have heard all the rumors involving Robinson Cano. It appears every Yankees fan, blogger, and media type believes that Cano should, and will, be traded. My take: Is this a smart move for the Yankees?
Dealing Cano now would be trading a stock at its lowest value. There is nothing wrong with listening to offers for the talented and enigmatic second baseman. Just like I said when we discussed Carlos Beltran, you have to at least be open to new ideas because you never know what another team will offer. I personally don’t see teams overpaying for him after his 2008 season. It doesn’t help that you hear whispers about his attitude throughout various media outlets. I am also sure teams took notice when the Yankees went public with their desire to bring Larry Bowa back in the fold.
I believe the Yankees should carefully think over trading Cano. Last off season, there were many who thought the Mets had to move Jose Reyes. This was primarily based on a sub par second half. Thankfully Omar Minaya didn’t feel the same way. Reyes bounced back and had a great 2008. I could easily see Cano doing the same for the Yankees in 2009.
I wanted to leave you with statistical comparisons via Baseball Reference to Robinson Cano. Just a little thought for you to mull over while all of us at NY Baseball Digest waits for the World Series to end.

Yankees are really hoping Bowa comes back ..
Bowa is the one who kept Cano in line ..
Trading Cano has nothing to do with his production ..
But the fact he’s as lazy on the baseball diamond as Randy Moss is on the football field .. And that’s real lazy.
