Audio of the Day: Ron Darling

Back in April of 2009 SNY Analyst Ron Darling joined me to talk about his book “The Complete Game: Reflections on Baseball, Pitching, and Life on the Mound.

Many fans remember Darling for his success with the Mets, but he pitched perhaps the best college game in history. In May of 1981, while pitching for Yale, he locked up in a scoreless duel with St. John’s lefty, and future teammate, Frank Viola. Darling took a no hitter into the twelfth inning, ultimately losing the game 1-0, but his performance was the longest no hitter in NCAA history.

He was selected in the 1st round (9th overall) of the 1981 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers and, before the 1982 season began, he and Walt Terrell were traded to the Mets for Lee Mazzilli. While in New York, Darling would win 99 games, pitch in the All Star Game, and win a Gold Glove.

Listen to Ron talk about the release of his book, what he went through developing as a pitcher, and other baseball memories.
