Dickey Could Join List of Local Knucklers

By Mike Silva ~ December 23rd, 2009. Filed under: NY Baseball Memories.

The Mets signing of R.A Dickey sure won’t bring the excitement of Jason Bay, but knuckleball pitchers always interest me. Maybe it’s because the pitch takes non prospects and makes it into a career, like in the case of Tim Wakefield, or because of the novelty of the pitch. Whatever it is I enjoy learning more about the art of throwing a knuckleball. For fun I did some research and with the help of this site found a list of all the knuckleball pitchers in baseball. The following are knuckleball pitchers that played for the Mets or Yankees:

Jim Bouton
Hal Brown
Sam Gibson
Ken Johnson
Johnny Lindell
Bob Moorhead
Joe Niekro
Phil Niekro
Rich Sauveur
Paul Schreiber
Bobby Shantz
Dennis Springer
Marlin Stuart
Tom Sturdivant
Bobby Tiefenauer

The site goes on to list players who weren’t knuckleball pitchers by definition, but added it to their repertoire at some point. Perhaps in 2010 R.A Dickey will become the 16th knuckleball pitcher to play for the Mets or Yankees.

If you’re interested in some reference links, I have added the list of knuckleball pitchers to the “resources” sidebar permanently. I also found this video back in May which shows you how to throw a knuckleball. Pretty interesting stuff that I hope you enjoy.
