Don’t Be Surprised If Locals Stay Quiet in Indy
By Mike Silva ~ December 7th, 2009. Filed under: Offseason Speculation.
Many anticipate the local teams to work diligently on improving their roster this week. I believe the winter meetings will serve Omar Minaya and Brian Cashman more as the foundation of future moves than tangible results.
The Matt Holliday and Roy Halladay sweepstakes most certainly won’t be finalized this week, but should start to develop. If John Lackey starts his negotiations at $100 million he won’t sign anytime soon- if ever. The only big name that may be off the market by Thursday is Jason Bay who appears to be the main target of an aggressive Seattle team.
Sure, there could be a Bengie Molina signing and the Yankees will try to lock down one of their own free agents, however even Johnny Damon may drag as he apparently wants a third year.
Yankees fans will probably understand if their team takes a conservative approach, but watching the hysteria about the orange and blue should be fun. This is a fan base that spent countless hours discussing Alex Cora, Chris Coste, and Henry Blanco last week. The odds of them accepting the foundation of a deal later in the winter are very slim.
Something tells me New York fans may have a very quiet winter meetings experience.
