Concerns About Millwood’s Durability
By Mike Silva ~ November 21st, 2009. Filed under: Offseason Speculation.
Although it appears unlikely the rumored three way deal between the Mets, Rangers, and Cubs will go down I decided to look into Kevin Millwood a bit. Howard did a great job of breaking down the reasons to like Millwood yesterday. I would support, even encourage, such a deal since it would free the Mets of Castillo and bring in a solid veteran starter to New York. Today, after receiving information, I now have reservations.
One scout told NYBD that some in the Texas organization have concerns about Millwood’s durability. If you look at his injury history he had elbow issues back in 2004, but nothing to indicate these concerns are warranted. Anyway you have to ask the question about why Texas would be willing to trade a veteran starter with a track record of success in the American League. The Rangers have one of the best farms systems in baseball and young pitchers like Scott Feldman, Derek Holland, and Tommy Hunter in the rotation. There have also been rumors of the team being payroll conscience this offseason and bringing in Milton Bradley will not provide financial relief. Remember, Millwood is on the last year of his contract so Texas could keep him around to eat innings and mentor their younger pitchers. The fact they are willing to possibly trade him causes me to raise an eyebrow.
Again, I am not saying Millwood is injured. All I am reporting is industry concerns about his health going into his age 35 season. It wouldn’t help the Mets to rid themselves of Castillo and bring in a pitcher that will be unable to contribute on the field. The more you look at the pitching market the harder it appears it will be for the Mets to upgrade the starting rotation.

Can’t forget about Martin Perez and Robbie Ross in the Rangers system as well. lol.

Millwood’s second half was not very good…and he seemed to break down, but not injury-wise.
