Report: Damon and SF Not a Fit

I spoke with a member of the San Francisco Giants management Thursday evening in regards to the rumor that the organization had interest in free agent outfielder Johnny Damon. We were told the following. “You can go to any bookie and bet we will not sign Johnny Damon.”

This strong statement makes me believe that the rumors are being floated directly by Damon’s agent, Scott Boras. We were also told by our main Yankees source down in Tampa that the team is holding firm on wanting to sign Damon to “only” a short term deal. “If he (Damon) really loves New York and wants to come back as much as he says he does, it’s going to have to be at Cashman’s price.”

We were also told that if they don’t resign Damon, the Yanks could be a player for Matt Holliday. “Cash is playing it cool. He’s going to wait to see how things progress with Holliday before he gets involved.”

We were also told that the Yankees have had internal discussion regarding Mike Cameron. The plan would be to have Cameron play centerfield until Austin Jackson is ready. What this would mean for Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner is anyone’s guess.
