Mets Top 10 Prospect List

By Matt Pignataro ~ November 7th, 2009. Filed under: Mets Minors.

Baseball America has released the list of Mets Top 10 prospects. Here is the list:

1. Jenrry Mejia, rhp
2. Wilmer Flores, ss
3. Fernando Martinez, of
4. Ike Davis, 1b
5. Brad Holt, rhp
6. Jon Niese, lhp
7. Reese Havens, 2b/ss
8. Josh Thole, c
9. Ruben Tejada, 2b/ss
10. Juan Urbina, lhp

I’m a little surprised not to see OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis, RHP Kyle Allen, or RHP Jeurys Familia on the list. I thought Nieuwenhuis would easily make the list as he had a very strong season at St. Lucie, hitting .274 with 16 HR, 71 RBI’s and 16 SB. Then finishing the year at Binghamton  batting .406 with a HR, and 2 RBI in 8 games. In talking with scouts, Nieuwenhuis’s game has been compared to Curtis Granderson with potential become a 20-20 guy.

The one name on this list that I’m shocked to see is Ruben Tejada. Tejada to me isn’t a top 10 prospect nor a top 20 prospect. I really don’t see anything special in Tejada. He has a good glove and a below average bat, but nothing else that jumps out at you. In 134 games with the B-Mets, Tejada hit .289 with 5 HR and 46 RBI’s.

For those who don’t know me, I’m Matt Pignataro and I run a Mets blog called Seven Train to Shea. Along with the blog we host a radio show on BlogTalkRadio, which returns Sunday November 22 at 7 PM EST with featured guest Ted Berg of SNY.tv. I’m currently studying marketing at Eastern Washington University. I also work for the Spokane Indians a Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Texas Rangers.

You do not have to be special to make a top 10 prospect list, specially in a weak system. Tejada was one of the younger guys in AA and more than held his own. He is considered the best defensive infielder in the organization and at SS that is very valuable. Has good plate discipline and makes good contact. Also has good enough speed to steal between 2030 bases in a year.

Should he be in front of Allen, Familia and Kirk? probably not but he should be in the discussion.

remember that Tejada was only 18 playing at AA. that should put things into perspective a little more. hopefully he lives up to the hype, as i think us mets fans are starting to lose hope with F-mart, who can’t seem to stay healthy.

Don’t worry, making # 9 in the horrible Mets minor league system is not saying much for Tejada.

I saw Tejada play a couple of times this year. His range didn’t impress me earlier in the year, but seem to be better when I saw him in June. Offensively he is what he is. Keith Law seems to like the kid and perhaps he can be another Alex Cora backup type. Certainly not what you were hoping out of Top 10.

Anyway, remember this, go to any team’s Top 10 from a given year and there is a good # of duds that don’t even make it to pro ball, much less as a backup. Just something to think about
