Yanks Robbed, What’s With Bruney, Irish American HOF

By Mike Silva ~ July 7th, 2009. Filed under: Morning Digest.

- The poor umpiring will not be a major topic of conversation because the Yankees had a 5-2 homestand. What if they lose the division by a game? Will you remember today when you play Game 7 in Fenway? What about if you lose the division by a game? What if it costs someone their job or career as a Yankee? That is why the behavior by Marty Foster is abhorrent. If you missed it, here is my rant from yesterday.

- Do you get the feeling that Brian Bruney is not healthy? When I interviewed him in Trenton I didn’t get a “warm and fuzzy feeling” that he was ready to go. Lots of vague answers on his health, ability to go back to back days, and long term prospects. There were whispers that he will eventually need TJ surgery. His ERA has gone up over a run per nine innings since his return.

- Nothing personal against Michael Kay, but I think David Cone would be a much better if he was in the SNY booth. Kay is just too corny to bring out the best in his partner. He is too much of a “yah team” announcer. Coney’s personality would be a perfect fit with Hernandez, Cohen, and Darling. Bet you would get some wild stories as well. Oh and I can attest to the fact that David was no boy scout. I heard a story once about him streaking on the Mets charter back in 1992.

- Everyone questioned PH Matsui in the ninth inning. He certainly is old, gimpy, and far from consistent anymore, but he has been hot the last week and still hits well with ducks on the pond. I Can’t go crazy about that decision.

- He may have failed today, but watch Eric Hinske become the next Yankee acquisition to elevate his game in the Bronx. Just think Jose Vizcaino, Glenallen Hill, and Ruben Sierra (the second time around).

- Andy Pettitte continues to have some ugly numbers at Yankee Stadium (5.37 ERA, .322 BAA). Pete Abraham thought that you might have gone an inning too long with Andy. You would think that the Yanks would have to watch Andy the third time around the batting order and beyond, but the stats don’t bear that theory out. Interesting how he seems to pitch better when he goes deeper into games and pitches 75 to 100.

- Looks like Jose Molina is on the way back. You can get updates about his night in Trenton at Mike Ashmore’s Blog.

- Which no name pitcher’s outing aggravated Yankees fans the most? Fernando Nieve, Craig Stammen, or Ricky Romero? Is there another?

- Former Yankee Paul O’ Neill will be inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame at Foley’s Pub today at noon. Other inductees are former 1b Steve Garvey, umpire Jim Joyce, broadcaster Vin Scully, and reporter Ed Lucas.

- Do the fans impact the outcome of games? Producer of the film Joy of Sox, Rick Leskowitz, will tell us about his project which examines science, superstition, and sports. Former AL MVP, Fred Lynn, gives the players take on this concept and chats a bit about the AL East race and his upcoming trip to the 2009 All Star Game in St. Louis.
