NYBD MILB Roundup – 7/5/09

By Mike Silva ~ July 5th, 2009. Filed under: Mets Minors, Yanks Minors.

- We talked about Austin Jackson (named to IL All Star team this week) on a recent show. I mentioned the lack of power he has displayed at AAA, but over the last 10 games he has hit 2 homers.

- Shelley Duncan expressed frustration with this article. I think Shelley has done enough that he deserves another chance at the big league level. I like how he said that a scout could assess the outside, but not the inside. When it comes to dealing with Shelley, I can attest, he is an All Star.

- George Kontos will be out for the year needing Tommy John surgery.

- Nelson Figueroa, a topic of conversation the last few weeks on this site, got his 4th win of the year pitching 6 innings and giving up only 2 runs. Figueroa will be part of the IL All Star game.

- Connor Robertson, brother of the Yankees David, was sent all the way down to High A St. Lucie. That is a hard drop all the way from AAA. If you remember, he was acquired as part of the Scott Schoeneweis deal.

- If Fernando Martinez is hurt for an extended period, I wanted to see who would be most likely to take his place. Obviously, Angel Pagan would be first choice when he returns healthy, but Emil Brown continues to hit well (.304, 2,  12) and Corey Sullivan has raised his average to .294 with a couple of homers.

- The Jesus Montero power outage is over in a big way. He has hit 5 homers this week!

- Jed Weisberger told us during his show appearance that he thought Zach McAllister was closer to the big leagues than a George Kontos. With the injury to Kontos it will be interesting to see if McAllister is promoted to AAA later this year.

- Jeremy Bleich was promoted to AA Trenton and had a rough debut (5 plus inning, 5 runs, and a loss).

- Josh Thole was placed on the DL earlier this week.

- Ike Davis hit his first AA homer last night. He is hitting .262 since his promotion to Binghamton.

- He always seems to get lost, but Shawn Bowman is having a nice season (2.94, 7, 34) for Binghamton. I doubt there is much of a future with the Mets, but he plays great defense and has had to overcome back issues. He deserves to get a chance, like Mike Carp has in Seattle, to make it with another organization.

- Austin Romine is hitting .324 with 3 homers and 7 RBI over the last 10 games. With all the Montero talk, don’t forget about the other catching prospect.

- Adam Olbrychowski, Jonathan Hovis, and Tim Norton are all putting up nice numbers in relief for Tampa.

- Pat Venditte made his FSL debut this week with 3 scoreless innings for Tampa.

- Brian Baisley (1b) was hitt .339 in Charleston but has struggled (.167 in 30 games) for Tampa.

- Zach Lutz (.277, 5, 30) seems to be having the most success out of all the 2008 Cyclones that are left on the St. Lucie roster.

- Manuel Banuelos, who has been talked about since being named to the futures game, has a 1.61 ERA since May 9th.

- Neil Medchill (.333, 2, 7) is leading Staten Island in hitting and Trenton Lare (0.75 WHIP) has put up impressive numbers in his 3 starts.

- The Cyclones are off to a 13-2 start. Brandon Moore (buddy of loyal listener Elwood) has 2 wins and pitched to a 0.82 ERA. Matt Bouchard, who struggled in Binghamton earlier this year, is hitting over .400.

- Congrats to all the local guys who made MILB all star games this month.
