Chris Young and Mets Pitching Depth

By Mike Silva ~ March 26th, 2012. Filed under: New York Mets.

The Mets brought RHP Chris Young back today on a minor league deal. Although Young had the same surgery last season that has sidelined Johan Santana for nearly two years, some reports optimistically have him back on the mound by late May. Again, we know all the depth issues the team has, which makes me wonder if they would also consider Andy Sonnanstine.

Sonnanstine is now a free agent after declining the Cubs minor league assignment. I advocated the Mets looking at him when he was non-tendered by Tampa.

I am not suggesting that Sonnanstine is anything more than depth, but it might not be easy cracking a big league roster at this point. If he takes a similar minor league deal with the Mets it’s possible he would be in the rotation well before any June 1st opt-out.

He is a contact pitcher with a low strikeout rate (5.7% for career) and solid groundball percentage (42.2% for his career).

As for Young, maybe you could get a half season of solid performance. The history of injuries means you may get 18-20 starts from him over the course of the season. Knowing how difficult it’s been for Santana to return, I doubt we see Young this year.

It’s too bad he can’t stay healthy since he’s been pretty good (49-34, 3.74, ERA+ of 111) when he’s been on the mound.

The more competent veteran arms you bring onboard, the better chance this team has of respectability this year.
