Results of NYBD Mets Hall of Fame Vote

By Mike Silva ~ February 13th, 2012. Filed under: New York Mets.

Due to the strong debate about John Franco‘s induction into the Mets Hall of Fame, I created a BBWAA-style vote for the Mets Hall of Fame.

On last night’s radio program, I shared the results with Matt Cerrone of Metsblog. Here is how you voted:

Mike Piazza 95.3%
Ron Darling 70.6%
Edgardo Alfonzo 66.4%
Howard Johnson 59.7%
Jesse Orosco 57.3%
Al Leiter 46.0%
David Cone 29.9%
Sid Fernandez 23.7%
Jon Matlack 23.2%
Lee Mazzilli 22.7%
John Olerud 20.9%
John Stearns 20.4%
Kevin McReynolds 7.6%

It appears that Piazza gets overwhelming support (no surprise), but I was a bit surprised about the strong support of Ron Darling over Edgardo Alfonzo. Howard Johnson also received strong support.

As I suspected, Mets fans still have a bad taste in their mouth regarding Al Leiter. I think outside of Piazza, Leiter deserves induction for anchoring the staffs on those late-90s Bobby Valentine teams.

When you factor in service time and impact on the organization, I voted for Piazza, Alfonzo, Leiter, Cone, Orosco, Darling, and HoJo.

Won’t lie and say I’m a Mets fan, but my wife is, and Leiter was one of her favorite players. I’d like to see him recognized some day.

  2. Jon M

I would go Piazza, Alfonzo, Cone, Darling, Orosco. Another person who I don’t see on the list, is Bobby Valentine himself. His results as Mets manager outpaced the talent on the teams- and he had to deal with Steve Phillips as the GM…

Also, I STRONGLY oppose Franco going into the Mets Hall. Especially with a better Mets Lefty reliever, Orosco, still not in.
