Bill Pulsipher Retires, Takes Over as Winnipeg Pitching Coach

By Mike Silva ~ February 13th, 2012. Filed under: Independent Baseball, New York Mets.

Here is some of the first news from independent baseball in 2012.

Former Mets prospect Bill Pulsipher has finally hung up his spikes after spending 18-years in professional baseball. Last season, he was with Somerset in the Atlantic League, where he went 3-6 with an ERA of 4.00 in 18 starts.

The former member of Generation K told me during an interview last summer that he was looking to move into coaching. That opportunity has come with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association- a team he pitched for in 2009.

During my interview, Pulsipher discussed his time with the Mets, and the challenges he’s faced overcoming depression a anxiety.

In a lot of ways, the disastrous health of he, Jason Isringhausen and Paul Wilson was a turning point in how big league teams viewed their pitching prospects.

After throwing 96 innings in St. Lucie in 1993, Pulsipher jumped to 201 innings in 1994, and a combined 218 between Norfolk and the big league club in 1995. Jim Duquette, who was the assistant farm director at the time, admitted to me that all three kids received too high of a workload, but the mentality at the time is “if you are going to throw 200 innings in the majors, you first have to do it in the minors.”

You could read more about the journey of Bill Pulsipher from a feature I ran in June of 2011.

You can also download the interview that aired on my June 19th, 2011 show.

Wish Bill P the best of luck. That was a very nice interview you did with him, Mike, and I’m glad to see he’s getting his chance to teach.
