Andrew Marchand of ESPN NY dispels this rumor

@trager11 I’m told that Trumbo-Robertson rumor is not true. Makes no sense from Yankees perspective. Forget about that one.Sat Jan 14 18:06:09 via TweetDeck

Would this type of deal make sense?

David Robertson is certainly expendable with the fact that Phil Hughes, in all likelihood, will be moved to the bullpen. The pen consists of Soriano, Hughes, Robertson, and Rivera. You also have George Kontos in Scranton and Joba Chamberlain is set to return mid-season.

I realize the Yankees could use a right-handed hitter in the DH spot vacated by Montero, but I am not sure Mark Trumbo is their type of player. Although he hit 29 HRs and drove in 87 runs, he’s a low OBP player that didn’t hit LHP at an extraordinary rate. On a positive note, Trumbo is versatile as he can play the corner outfield spots and first base.

Robertson, however, along with Hughes could be a potential replacement for Mariano Rivera. I have issues with D-Rob’s high walk rate (4.7), but if you strike out batters at such an insane rate (13.5) it doesn’t matter.

This doesn’t make a ton of sense from the Angels point of view as they would be trading the runner up for the Rookie of the Year for a bullpen arm. If they needed a closer, I could see the connection, but Jordan Walden did a nice job for them last year. Trumbo is still a useful hitter for Anaheim even though Pujols is manning first base.

Not sure where this rumor is coming from, but I don’t see Trumbo as the type of hitter the Yankees would want.

That would be a terrible move. And who the heck is Scott Swaim? What I could see happening is the Yanks moving perhaps both Hughes and/or Betances for a young, versatile bat that can preferably play some 3b. How about Hughes for Chase Headley or Martin Prado?
