Edwin Jackson: One Year Deal or Walk Away

By Mike Silva ~ January 12th, 2012. Filed under: New York Yankees.

The Yankees appear to like Edwin Jackson, just not at the rumored 5 year/$60 million dollar level set by Scott Boras. With many of the veteran starting pitchers off the table, Jackson is the best available arm out there. He will give you innings, has a track record in the American League East, and postseason experience on his resume. CBS Sports Jon Heyman believes the Yankees would prefer a shorter-term deal for Jackson, but I believe the Yankees shouldn’t sign him for anything more than one year.

Jackson does have a no-hitter on his resume and, as mentioned before, won 14 games for Tampa in 2008. He is a .500 pitcher for his career (60-60) with a 4.46 ERA. Not bad for a 4th starter, but not someone worth an expensive multi-year deal. The Cardinals acquired him from Chicago last year, and saw him get hit hard in the postseason.

Despite the fact Jackson will give you close to 200 innings, he will also allow well over a hit per inning and walk about 4 per 9. Freddy Garcia has actually posted significantly better numbers last year for a third of Jackson’s asking price. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hector Noesi could win 12 games with a 1.4 WHIP in the Yankees rotation. I see Jackson as a more consistent A.J. Burnett.

If he falls into their lap for 1 year I would make the deal. If not, just continue to pursue some scrapheap options and go into the season with the mindset of developing the young pitchers, and winning with the bats and bullpen.

Wow. For the first time ever, I completely agree with everything Mike said in this article.

Mike, I’d be willing to go 2 years, 20 million for him. But I’d strongly prefer Oswalt or Kuroda for 1 year. The thing about Jackson is that he is entering his prime and is a real innings eater.

Question though is do we need an innings eater without the stellar pen we have?
