Link: How About a Yankee Stadium/Citi Field Winter Classic DH?

The Rangers beat the Flyers 3-2 at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia yesterday in the 2012 editions of the Winter Classic. For a non-hockey fan like me, this was an entertaining game on a day where there was little else to watch. How about two Winter Classic games played in New York on New Year’s Day? The NHL should make this happen. I think staging a doubleheader with two hockey games in the city would be a great way to market the sport to casual and future fans. Why not use Citi Field and Yankee Stadium as the venue?

I had a similar thought watching the game – why don’t they have multiple outdoor games in 3-4 venues, perhaps spread over a few days. I also thought that it would be fun to attend the game for the spectacle, but it looked like most of the seats were pretty far from the ice and the sightlines weren’t great. Which led to the idea that they probably could sell a lot more tickets if temporary seating were erected closer to the ice, as they’ve done for boxing matches at venues like Yankee Stadium.

Having attended one of these events, I can testify on how pleasantly surprised I was at the good look I had of the action on the ice despite sitting very far from it. The big screen helped, though.

    Mike,

After the 2008 season, there was talk about the the Winter Classic being held at Yankee Stadium before it got knocked down. The original plan was to have the Islanders vs the Rangers, which would have been fantastic. The problem was that the plumming at the old stadium was deemed to be too old to handle a crowd in the winter, so the plan was scrapped.

As far as a Double Header, how about Rangers at Islanders at Citi Field and Devils and Flyers at Yankee Stadium? That would be great!!

That would be great for us in the NYC area, Frank, but the TV folks might prefer to involve other markets.
