Listen: Sports Media Watchdog Podcast

By Mike Silva ~ December 26th, 2011. Filed under: Sports Media Commentary.

As you know, there is a spinoff site called Sports Media Watchdog where I discuss my weekly thoughts on sports media.

It’s still a developing project (feedback always encourage!), as the heart and soul of my content is what I do here at NYBD.

I have developed a podcast over there where I talk to media personalities. Unlike NYBD it’s not live or weekly, but there is some interesting content.

My first guest was Dino Costa of Mad Dog Radio, and for the holidays I sat down with Bob Mantz Jr. of Bob’s Blitz aka  “a blitzkrieg of sports, pop-culture, and stupidity. Plus Bob’s Babes and top YouTube videos.”

Bob has been around since 8/8/2008 and was one of the first to report the Jets interest in Brett Favre. Along the way he’s been mentioned by WFAN’s Boomer & Carton, interviewed Jenn Sterger and Phil Mushnick of the NY Post.

During our 45+ minute conversation we talked about a bunch of sports media topics, but Bob did discuss who he thinks are some of his most interesting media personalities, which included SNY’s Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling. Bob actually shares a classic Hernandez story based on a personal experience of his own. New York Giants fans will get an interesting story about radio play-by-play announcer Bob Papa.

Well, I listened to the Dino podcast ysterday. I’m a good example of Dino being successful at his job. He wanders a little too much for my tastes, he gets a little egomanical beyond comic at times, for my tastes, he’s not my primary must listen when in the car in the evenings, but I ALWAYS tune in at points, and often stay longer than expected. Something compelling about him. That’s how you build audience, and rep. Some will swear by you, others will listen because they don’t like you. But it’s the tweeners knowing who you are that make the difference.

In a profession of dues payers, Dino’s career path seemed even exceptionally interesting. I applaud his perseverance, and congratulate him on SI’s Richard Duetsch naming him one of the top national radio voices of 2011. Course Duetsch is the same guy that left Orel Hershiser off his choice of best game analyst, so he’s not perfect, but it’s still a nice mention to a guy who deserves success.
