Yanks Make Solid Rule 5 Pick in Brad Meyers

By Mike Silva ~ December 8th, 2011. Filed under: Yanks Minors.

The Yankees elected to select Washington RHP Brad Meyers during this morning’s Rule 5 draft. The likelihood of Meyers sticking with the Yankees the entire season is slim (Rule V picks have about a 30% success rate), but it’s a solid pick and I could see them attempting to work out a deal for him (see Jamie Hoffmann in 2010) if he impresses in Spring Training.

The 6’6” Meyers was the Nationals Pitcher of the Year in 2009 when he went 11-3 with a 1.72 ERA, splitting the year between High-A and Double-A. While jogging that season, he suffered a stress fracture to his foot, an injury that has led to two foot surgeries. That has led to his stock dropping, and thus being unprotected by Washington. For his MILB career he is 31-18, 2.86 ERA, and has an impressive 3.60 BB/SO ratio. He’s averaged less than a home run and 2 walks per nine innings.

Meyers throws a fastball consistently in the 89-91 mph range, with a plus slider. He also throws a changeup, but has yet to find any consistency with the pitch. “There’s deception in his delivery,” Harrisburg manager Tony Beasley said earlier this year. “Some of those swings weren’t very good, which tells you the hitters weren’t seeing the ball well.”

This past season he was 6-5 with a 3.48 ERA for Triple-A Syracuse.

We tend to get caught up with velocity and strikeouts, but give me someone that has command, control, and throws strikes. Will he dominate? Of course not, but look at what Detroit’s Doug Fister has become by following that formula.

I don’t want to make a big deal about such a minor move, but I really like the process employed by the Yankees with this pick. He’s a longshot to make the team, but if he is healthy he could provide solid depth. I can’t see why they wouldn’t be able to work out a deal with Washington before rosters are finalized.

I wonder why the Mets didn’t draft anyone.

They don’t have room on 40-man I believe; after free agent signings

  3. Joseph DelGrippo

From the above video, it appears Meyers throws slightly across his body and his stride is very small for a guy his size.

If he sticks with the Yankees, look for them to straighten and lengthen his stride, which could improve his fastball velocity without doing any damage to his command.

It was a good pick but it unlikely Meyers stays a Yankee.

Following the additions of Torres and Ramirez, there are now 39 players on the Mets’ 40 man.

    They could’ve made one selection.

Then why didn’t they at least protect Rhiner Cruz?

  6. Joseph DelGrippo

    Stu,

I guess lots of people don’t like 100 mph fastballs. Lol.

  7. Chuck

He spent 8 years in the minors.

Most likely for a variety of reasons.
