Looking at LHP Cesar Cabral

By Mike Silva ~ December 8th, 2011. Filed under: Yanks Minors.

The Yankees also acquired 23-year old LHP Cesar Cabral from Kansas City for cash considerations. Cabral was drafted by the Royals in the this morning’s Rule 5.

Sox Prospects describes Cabral as ”Lefty with a solid frame and a smooth delivery. Pitches exclusively from the stretch. Fastball sits between 88-92 mph and tops out at 95 mph. Secondary pitches include an excellent 81-83 mph circle changeup, a mid-70s slurvey curveball, and a sharp 79-82 mph slider. Gets a lot of swings and misses with his changeup, which has nice downward movement. Excellent command and control, attacks hitters.”

Last year in Double-A Portland he struck out 10.8/9 and posted a 3.48 ERA.

This is the second year in a row he did the Rule 5 shuffle. His experience last year was odd, as he was drafted by Tampa Bay last year, waived, claimed by Toronto, waived by Toronto, claimed a second time by Tampa, and finally returned to Boston before the start of the season.

With Boone Logan as the lone lefty in the Yankees bullpen, it appears that Cabral will have an opportunity to win the job as the second lefty. Meanwhile, Pedro Feliciano will get paid $4 million dollars to rehab his shoulder injury

A lefty that strikes out more than a batter per inning is a move I can’t complain about.

The Yankees are making the kind of value moves that you would expect to see from Tampa Bay. What a brave new payroll world we live in.
