Yanks Not Afraid of Long-Term Deal for Wilson

By Frank Russo ~ November 23rd, 2011. Filed under: Digest Contributors, Rumor Mill.

I reported back in October that  Despite his difficulties in the post season, the Yankees are still going to go after C.J. Wilson. They don’t look at him as they did a Cliff Lee, but more a solid number two starter.

I reached out to my Tampa source for an update. He told me that things should start to heat up after Thanksgiving. The Yankees do seem willing to go as high as six years with Wilson. They are concerned about the rotation and would prefer not to repeat last offseason where they imported “value” arms like Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon. A sure sign that Wilson’s days in Texas are over is how Jon Daniels already has turned his focus to beefing up the bullpen. Would you be surprised if the signing of Joe Nathan is a precursor to Neftali Feliz entering the rotation?

Rumors are swirling that Wilson will demand 6 years and $120 million. Based on what I have been told, this isn’t a number that scares the Yankees. They are also still unsure whether Yu Darvish will be posted. If he is, they will be in on the bidding. I have heard that both Billy Eppler and Damon Oppenheimer favor a pursuit of Darvish.

    $20 million for Wilson?

    No way.

4/60 is the max I’d give him.

  2. Saket

I’d go 5 for 75 for sure. He’s a good pitcher, is left handed, and doesn’t have a whole lot of miles on his arm.

  3. Joseph DelGrippo

Wow. Frank’s source indicates that Texas signing Joe Nathan could be a precursor to Neftali Feliz entering the rotation.

And to think all I had to do was read online that Feliz was entering the rotation, and get direct quotes from Neftali regarding his excitement!

And I could have saved myself a phone call to Tampa. It’s amazing how no one in the Yankees hierarchy is wondering “the source” where all these leaks are coming from.

Have your source keep coming up with these “Headline News” facts, Frank.

It’s always good for a laugh.

  4. Joseph DelGrippo

Also, it was said by “the source” the Yankees do not want to repeat the use of value arms like they did last season?

It appears to me that Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon both did very well and and various times helped solidify the Yankee rotation.

I would much rather pay middling prices for these types of value pitchers, rather than repeating with the AJ Bunett fiasco from several years go by signing CJ Wilson to an exhorbitant contract.

Because by signing Wilson to a long term deal, two years from now, the rotation will have big money guys in CC, AJ and CJ, with the possibility of Hughes, too.

So, then where are the spots for all their young arms in the minors?

  5. Juke Early

Inside info or not, Frank is a passionate Yankee fan for 50 years. So I enjoy what he has to say. As opposed to Butt Sellout & his Buttboys who are doing their best to take down sports greatest franchise with their cronyism, one petty bite at a time.

AND no matter what anybody says, Cash better find a way & earn that new paycheck. . ..

  6. Michael Maggi

Don’t question Frank’s sources, he definitely has a strong connection with the Yanks down in Tampa. Don’t forget he is an author and utilized certain sources for his book.

  7. Chuck

“Don’t forget he is an author and utilized certain sources for his book”

He wrote a book about dead guys, so one would assume his sources are, too.

(Sorry, Frank..Michael put it on the tee, I just hit it).

  8. Frank Russo

    Delgrippo,

You are nothing but a punk…plain and simple. I wrote that piece yesterday before the Rangers annoucned Feliz was going into the rotation. Mike was only able to put it up this morning, that’s why it ran late.

If you don;tlike what I write, then compalin to Mike.

I have an idea. Why don’t you and I debate each other on the air. Better yet, you can come on the air with my guy from Tampa and make yourself look like the jealous little whiney baby that you are. He will eat you for lunch…you punk.

  9. David S.

Delgrippo is just a jealous creep, plain and simple. He loves to bash everyone he does not agree with…Hey Joe, really, grow the bleep upo alreay. Frank is right, your come across as nothing but a punk!

  10. Frank Russo

One last thing, you can whine all you want Delgrippo and try to put me down with your condescending comments, but it won’t stop me from reporting on the Yankees. Mike can vouch for my guy. He knows him and has spoken with him a lot over the past few years. And he has been right, more often than not. He’s forgotten more baseball that you’ll ever know.

  11. John

Message to Delgrippo…….we like Frank’s reports and columns on the Yankees. I mean wow, you really come across as mature when you attack someone like that. You should stick to what you do best. What that is is anyone’s guess.

  12. Joseph DelGrippo

Amazing that Frank got his couple friends to come on here and back him up. And Frank, the debate you brought up was my idea, which I presented to Mike two months ago and never heard anything more about it.

  13. Joseph DelGrippo

And how is it possible to forget more baseball than anyone else knows?

  14. Mike Silva

It is my fault that I haven’t gotten you two guys on to debate about the direction of the Yankees franchise, perhaps this Sunday is the right time… should be fun, I will be in touch.

  15. Frank Russo

    DelGrippo,

It was not your idea tp have a debate you moron. I asked Mike Silva 6 months ago to let me come on and debate you, 6 months, so stop taking credit for this idea.

Secondly, if you can’t comprehend what I wrote about my guy down in Tampa forgetting more baseball than someone like you actually knows, than you really are dumber than I thought.

Lastly, at least I have friends…..that being said, I get hundered times more posative feedback from people than negative from my work. God I can’t wait to debate you. You just can’t handle the fact that people who I have not even met or know actually enjoy my work and are willing to tell you off.

You really are nothing more than a snarky piece of tripe. I would suggest you bring a flak jacket because I will neither back down or cowtow to your garbage when we debate on the air. I am also going to make sure than my guy down in Tampa is on with me. I can’t wait to tear you apart.

  16. David S.

    DelGrippo,

I find it offensive that you are accusing me of being Franks “friend” when it comes to defending him. I have never met Frank, but I sure like his work on this website. I think what this boils down to is that you can’t take the heat when people don’t agree with you. Poor, poor DelGrippo. He can dish it out but he can’t take it. What a complete joke!

  17. John

    DelGrippo,

You wrote “two years from now, the rotation will have big money guys in CC, AJ and CJ, with the possibility of Hughes, too.”

The last time I looked, AJ’s contract will be up by then.

  18. Don

Hey Delgrippo your point you tried to make about the Yankees having three big money pitchers in 2 yrs is completely wrong. If you followed the Yankees you would know in 2 yrs AJ’s contract will be up so try to get your facts straight first before opening your mouth

  19. Caty

I hope Frank is right – I had heard Yanks were not pursuing any major free agent pitchers…

  20. J

I remember when Delgrippo tweeted that The mystery team on CLiff Lee was the Twins last year. haha

  21. Stink stank

Ladies please. Jeez. I like franks reports. Are they always accurate? Just check on Peter gammons conversion rate…he hasn’t gotten a trade right since the Nixon admin. Point is it’s entertaining and like many of you, I’m jonesin for baseball (is it me or does it feel like the ALDS was a year ago?) keep the content flowing . As for DelGripo… Well, frank – your comments legitimize his stuff more than anything else. Calling him a punk, albeit correctly is beneath you. Forget the debate and set up a boxing match – that’s the way real men settle issues. All this whiny blogosphere crud is for …like I said…little ladies.

  22. Chuck Johnson

“I remember when Delgrippo tweeted that The mystery team on CLiff Lee was the Twins last year.”

They WERE the mystery team, smart guy.

The Phillies were always Lee’s first choice, were never out of the bidding and the lines of communication between them never stopped, even when Lee was talking with other teams.

    Joke’s on you, son.

  23. J

Jon Heyman constantly tweeted Yanks-Rangers in on Lee. But ehre is another team in on him. #mysteryteam….he didn’t end up on either Rangers-yanks and phillies were never mentioned….the mystery team was the Phillies since nobody knew that they were involved. Phillies being Lee’s first choice has nothing to do with the MSM and others not knowing who the other team in on him was. Nobody knew.

Mystery team was the Phillies to everybody. Even Yanks-Rangers had no idea Phillies were in on him. Yankees were mulling pulling their offer because they didn’t know what was taking so long for him to give them an answer regarding their offer.

twins were not the mystery team

  24. Chuck Johnson

Phillies were always in on Lee.

Therefore, they can’t be a mystery.

    Except to you, of course.

  25. J

And to Jon Heyman and the rest of the baseball writers in the world. No that it means anything of significance. I’m so sure you knew Lee was a threat to the Yankees in their pursuit of him. Maybe everybody should listen to you and kick aside Buster/Joel Sherman/Heyman etc. You know it all Chuck.

P.S. Mike and Frank–why do your commenters get so snotty to others on here. It’s like I’m in a chat room full of women. Name calling gets thrown around just because they say something else.

  26. Stu B

Why are you still talking about Lee? That’s old news.

  27. J

Just using him as an example. You’re not gonna jump down my throat too now are you…for god forbid bringing him up…

  28. Chuck Johnson

    You’re not getting it.

The Phillies were always Lee’s first choice.

They were never OUT of the negotiations.

Just because Lee was out talking with other teams doesn’t mean he stopped communicating with Philadelphia.

For a team to be a “mystery” they would have had to come in at the last minute and make an offer, a team which even your heroes didn’t know about.

    Hence, they were a mystery.

    Got it?

Buster Olney admitted to making up the Ryan Howard/Pujols trade rumor last summer because he needed to fill column space.

None of those nerdbags are worth listening to, but Olney’s the worst.

  29. Mike Silva

    J

Most comment sections become testy…. I think its the nature of the internet.

  30. J

No I completely know what you’re talking about. But i’m going to save going on a typing storm and saving my energy. Don’t remember Twins making an offer. If you got a piece saying they did show it to me. So I don’t see how they were a mystery either like you’re hero Delgrippo said.

If you’re so superior to the nerdbags I mentioned..how come I don’t see the sports industry leaning on your for information.

  32. Chuck Johnson

“Don’t remember Twins making an offer.”

Who said they made an offer?

Now look who’s making stuff up.

“how come I don’t see the sports industry leaning on your for information.”

    You sure?

The sports industry doesn’t lean on Olney and Heyman for information.

    They report it, that’s all.

  33. J

“I remember when Delgrippo tweeted that The mystery team on CLiff Lee was the Twins last year. haha”

    –that was my initial post

“They WERE the mystery team, smart guy.”

–that was your response to my post.

“For a team to be a “mystery” they would have had to come in at the last minute and make an offer, a team which even your heroes didn’t know about.”

that was your post just now. Sorry your points don’t line up.
First you say Twins were the mystery team. Then you said in order for a team to be a mystery tea,, they have to come in and make a last minute offer. Then you said who said the Twins didnt make an offer.

Don’t follow your logic Sir Chuck.

All I remember is that Yanks-Rangers in on Lee and the third team was a mystery team. If there were only 3 seriously in on Lee and he ended up signing with the Phillies, then where do the Twins fit in? Phillies-Rangers-Yankees..that’s 3…

  34. T.O. Chris

I still like Wilson on a 5 year deal between 75-85 million, I might add a vesting option but I’d be hesitant. AJ comes off the book after 2 more seasons so money frees up in the rotation then, and Wilson doesn’t rely on velocity like AJ did so I think he should age better.

He’ll never find 6/120, or all that close to it really. Unless the Nationals just go crazy again and pull a Werth like move for no reason.

  35. Joseph DelGrippo

Back to the original thought of this piece as written, that CJ Wilson was on the Yankees hit list:

    http://twitter.com/#!/BobKlap/status/144665740249808896

Yankees never wanted Wilson, not for 4 years, 5 years or the 6 years spoken about above.

  36. Mike Silva

Keep one thing in mind about how the CBA and revenue sharing bonus has changed the landscape – clearly CJ wanted the Yankees though

  37. Joseph DelGrippo

    C’mon Mike.

True, the CBA changed lots of things, including the revenue sharing and penalities involved in going over the “cap.”

From all indications, the Yankees were never even lukewarm on Wilson, yet all we heard here was the Yankees are going big for him.

And now we find out the Yankees had last shot, and passed without even talking.

And the fact that Wilson wanted the Yankees means nothing.

New CBA or not, it appears that Cashman and the Yankees are going with the kids or making a sensible trade without breaking the prospect bank.
