With Sabathia, It’s Years Not Dollars

By Frank Russo ~ October 22nd, 2011. Filed under: New York Yankees, Rumor Mill.

Wanted to report a quick hit here.

In talking to sources, the feeling is the Yankees are more concerned about the years on a potential CC Sabathia deal, not the dollars. As I have mentioned before, the Yanks will not be outbid by any team, including the Red Sox. The years are where they have more of a concern. Remember, they are staring at another 6 years of Alex Rodriguez at $143 million dollars.

We also have been debating CC’s weight and whether the Yankees should make it a bone of contention in his new deal. My source believes a weight clause with Sabathia would be a no-go. The Players Association doesn’t like it, and if other teams probably aren’t going to require it, so why should the Yankees?

Mike Silva adds:

I am guessing here, but if it’s years, not dollars, that concern the Yankees why not give him a 5 year deal for $28 million AAV? That would match Roger Clemens for the richest annual average value in the history of baseball. It would be 5 years/$140 million and $5 million dollar per year raise from his current deal. Right now, the highest pitcher AAV is Cliff Lee‘s $24 million with the Phillies.

If money is no object, I see no reason how another team could match that type of AAV. That is, unless Sabathia values more years and a lower AAV.

Again, I think a deal gets done and we will put this Sabathia talk to bed well before Thanksgiving.

Yankees let the hefty lefty go, use this season as a bridge to Banuelos and Bettances. CC is an Arod waiting to happen, injuries galore or coming.

Pls don’t go after CJ Wilson either, he hasn’t won a postseason game since the 1 last year!!

    ooops, or=are from above

CC hasn’t won against Any Ace in postseason, he never does. He also gives up too many hits, and takes too many pitches per batter. Cut your loses and rebuild, it’s in your farm system already.
