A David Wright Bidding War

By Mike Silva ~ October 18th, 2011. Filed under: New York Mets.

Teams such as Colorado, Boston, and Arizona have been mentioned as possibly interested in discussing a deal for David Wright after the season. If there are already rumblings of 3 teams, why wouldn’t there be more as the offseason went along.

If the Mets trade their franchise player, I believe the return would have to be similar to what the Rangers received for Mark Teixeira back in 2007 when Atlanta sent Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Elvis Andrus.

I believe the Mets need to bring back a young starting player, preferably at a premium position, a pitching prospect with upside, and if not a second pitching prospect with upside, a prospect with upside that players a premium position (catcher, shortstop, centerfield).

Here are some packages that I believe may be enticing to the Mets:

Colorado: I mentioned them as a suitor a couple of weeks ago and proposed centerfielder Dexter Fowler, catching prospect Wilin Rosario, and one of their top pitching prospects from the group LHP Tyler Matzek, RHP Chad Bettis, and LHP Drew Pomeranz.

Boston: The Sox would have to part with OF Josh Reddick, a top pitching prospect  such as RHP Anthony Ranaudo, and shortstop prospect Jose Iglesias in such a deal.

Arizona: Any deal would require a pitching prospect like RHP Trevor Bauer as a centerpiece, shortstop Stephen Drew, assuming Reyes leaves via free agency, and another pitching prospect like LHP Mike Belfiore. Bauer can’t be traded until the middle of this season, so he would have to be a PTBNL, but RH pitching prospect Jarrod Parker could be an equally viable centerpiece instead of Bauer. If Reyes is re-signed then centerfielder A.J. Pollock could replace Drew in the deal.

There are a lot of possibilities in a potential deal with Arizona. Any of them requires the D-Backs to center the deal around one of their top pitching prospects.

Again, I am not saying the Mets have to deal David Wright, but that they should inquire as to what kind of return he could fetch. If there are already 3 teams in the hunt, can’t you imagine more thinking about it? I could see both Chicago teams, Detroit, and maybe even Anaheim.

The Mets could agree to give any team a window to negotiate with Wright since the trade would be a free agent at the end of the season, which should help them with any prospect package.

Knowing Wright, I think he would be amenable to signing with whoever acquired him in the deal.

We will continue to speculate about deals as names of teams pop up. Let me hear what proposals you have.

I can’t see any team surrendering their top prospects for Wright at this point. The only reason teams are rumored to being asking about him is that his value is down from where it was, say, after the 2008 season. He has struggled since moving into Citi Field and teams are hoping to get Wright at a discounted price in hopes of a revival in their cozier ballpark (Arizona, Boston, Colorado). I would guess that if the Mets told the Rockies that it would take Fowler, Rosario, and a top pitching prospect they would be rejected. They might give up Ianetta and a mid-level pitching prospect, but probably not Rosario, Fowler, Pomeranz. I just don’t see Wright being traded while his value is this low. And if he bounces back in 2012 why would the Mets want to trade him anyway?

I do not believe we will ever get a fair return that will meet the Mets needs for Wright anytime soon. Unless we start discussing Danny Murphy as the third baseman and Jose bolts, trading Wright will only net a midle level prospect in the form of a pitcher, outfielder, and a catcher. Wright’s struggles have been noticeable thereby reducing his trade value. However, I feel that Wright has the potentialfor a big year with shorter fences helping. So why trade him for the risk of perhaps one to two of the players received catapulting to the franchise player level? We are on the hook for David for 31 Million fo rthe next two years. Who wants that contract?

I respect your opinion Mike and understand how difficult it can be from a writer’s standpoint to remain unbiased, but this article was clearly written by a Mets’ fan.

You’ve clearly over-stated Wright’s value, and his expected return.

    Chuck

I agree that my asking price might be “aggressive,” but you can’t justify anything less to the fans. None of these deals excite me 100%.

That is essentially what went into my thinking. I do think Wright can be underrated after a poor year, the guy still has 30 homer/100 RBI 300 batting average on his resume at 3b. Not many 3b better than him; you can’t deal him for less.

I think the biggest fan fall-out will come if the Mets’ let the defending NL batting champ walk for two draft picks.

From CO, Pomerantz or Bettis yes. Matzek- no. I´m no scout, but I can’t stand pitchers with terrible K/BB ratios. Control is critical- Pomerantz and Bettis both have it.
From CO, I’d like Fowler, Pomerantz, and Nolan Arenado (sp?), their up-and-coming 3B prospect. If they have Wright they won’t need him, but we will. Rosario is good, but CO needs a C too. Could the Mets swing a separate deal with SF for C Hector Sanchez (I think that’s the name)? They already have Posey at C, so they don’t have as much need for a young C.

Wright is young, and probably has a good amount of talent in him and is undeperforming, this in turn turns out to be Ubabalo Jimenez 2. Sandy would be dumb to not at least listen to offers for Wright, if he forces another bidding war between Boston,Colorodo and Arizona he could rip one right from them

As much as I’d hate to admit it, I think you’re overvaluing Wright.

I think his contract (he can void his 2013 option if traded) & his recent (2009, 2011) diminished production will play a huge part in what Sandy & Co can get for him.

At this time, I think he’s of more value to the Mets as the everyday 3b then as a trade chip.

you would have to also be kidding me if none of these deals excite you a top prospect,Fowler and somone else is a phenomanal return

  10. Jon M

I would gladly take Wright for Fowler, Juan Nicasio (SP) and a mid to high level prospect.

Another player I would consider if the Rockies are not open to trading Fowler would be Eric Young Jr. He boasted a .342 OBP this season with 27/31 steals in 229 PA’s. Young also has some versatility, capable of playing 2B and LF/CF.
