Steve Phillips Finally Wins a Championship as a General Manager

By Mike Silva ~ September 29th, 2011. Filed under: New York Mets, Sports Media Commentary.

Former Mets manager Steve Phillips is on the verge of winning the Sirius XM Fantasy Baseball Experts League and talked about it with the RotoExperts yesterday.

What was his strategy?

Phillips claims he turned over 23 of his 26 players on his roster during the course of the year. “Trader Phillips” acquired Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford and then flipped them to get Adrian Gonzalez. He also dealt Victor Martinez for Alex Avila. He says he got away from the “name” and looked more at the production of the player.

Phillips also admitted to focusing more on offense than pitching to win his league. He believed his ability to evaluate talent, evaluate team’s roster, and solve a problem for the other team while solving a problem for himself were paramount to his success. He did believe his real life experience as a GM was helpful.

For the record, he did admit to making his “fair share of his mistakes,” but believed good homework and staying aggressive made more of his decisions good than bad.

I posted this to have some fun with Mets fans today. I actually like Phillips on the radio, and don’t believe he did as bad a job as GM of the Mets as many believe. I do think his methodology was more conducive to short term success versus building a sustainable winning organization. He is not only GM with that philosophy throughout the organization’s history, with the exception, of course, of Frank Cashen’s tenure.
