Yanks Like Garza, But Cubs Prefer Dempster or Zambrano

The Yankees still would prefer a top of the rotation pitching like Felix Hernandez or Francisco Liriano, but neither is available. Right now, the Yankees most realistic target could be Cubs righty Matt Garza. Although the Yankees love Garza, the Cubs are more interested in dealing Ryan Dempster or Carlos Zambrano. Right now, the Yanks have no plans at making a run at either Dempster or Zambrano.

Garza would be the perfect fit in the Yankees rotation. He has an AL East pedigree, doesn’t fear the Red Sox (7-4, 3.83 for his career), and can be controlled for two more years. The Yankees wouldn’t give up Jesus Montero, Manny Banuelos, or Dellin Betances. But arms like Hector Noesi, Ivan Nova, Adam Warren, or David Phelps could be in play. So far this year Garza’s 4-7 with a 3.80 ERA for Chicago.

The Yanks also continue to have interest in Florida LOOGY Randy Choate. Earlier this week Choate and Jack McKeon differed on his utilization during a game against the Mets. Could he be on the way out? If so the Yankees will not give anything more than a C level prospect for the lefty.

Hey Mike, check out the piece I did this morning on TYA. If Garza’s a buy-low candidate, I’m all over it. I’d even give up Montero, who I’m pretty down on.
