Listen: Weekly Digest Tonight at 6pm

By Mike Silva ~ June 26th, 2011. Filed under: Radio Show.

Tonight I am headlined by longtime sports writer Phil Pepe.

Phil has been a friend to the show over the years, and he will discuss his latest book “1961*: The Inside Story of the Maris-Mantle Home Run Chase.” Pepe had a firsthand look at the ’61 Yanks and the historic home run race as he became the beat reporter for the team that August.

I will discuss my experience in Brooklyn to watch the Cyclones this past week. Hear me talk about my memories from the September 8th, 2001 clincher against the Staten Island Yankees, and why the environment at MCU Park is one of the best in baseball.

Former Mets manager Davey Johnson will take over the Washington Nationals. This could change the balance of power in the NL East, and signal to the rest of the league the Nats are ready to make the push to contender status.

Are the Yankees afraid to promote their prospects? NYBD contributors Jed Weisberger and Joe Delgrippo will give their take. I wonder if there is a philosophical void between Cashman and ownership, which will eventually lead to new leadership next season.

Finally, is Goose Gossage correct in saying that Mariano Rivera‘s job as closer is a “piece of cake?” Hear my thoughts.

What sort of contract might Sandy offer Reyes? Do his past and recent contracts offer a guide or hint as to the length or options? Will his contract have many incentives and bonuses?

I also hope you discuss Ike Davis and the Mets medical staff.

We didn’t get too much into the Mets medical staff, although this is a topic we will delve into in the next couple of weeks. Our First Half Recap will probably address a great deal of these things.

As for Reyes, I believe they will go 5 years and $85 million as a start. Maybe $100 – that is, if the Wilpons actually have the money to offer such a deal.

    Mike,

Excellent show. My first time listening live, and while it was good to hear my buddy Joe, I have to say Mr. Pepe’s recollections of 1961 was the highlight.

To hear first person accounts of someone who was there, and to hear he was insightful enough to take notes as things happened means he was relaying things accurately and not relying on fifty year memories.

    A real solid hour.

    Thanks,

    Chuck
