Morning Digest: Steve Phillips “Trade the Wilpons” Edition

By Mike Silva ~ June 19th, 2011. Filed under: Morning Digest.

Let’s start today’s Morning Digest with a story that is a typical he said/he said situation. According to Bar Stool Sports , his boy ran into Steve Phillips on the street on Friday. Asked him “trade Reyes?” Phillips responded “Trade the Wilpons.”

Maybe Fred and Jeff could take out a loan to keep Reyes. Considering half their SNY loan was used to pay out dividends, maybe we could allocate resources to an employee that actually produces.

Non baseball note, but if you are an athlete, should you be admitting on Twitter you are buying shoes for your wife in Bloomingdales?

So here I am at Bloomingdales texting her pictures of shoes and buying a new pair. @rebeccafeely you owe me!!less than a minute ago via Twittelator Favorite Retweet Reply

Jay Feely, come back to me.

In all seriousness, I am just having fun with Feely. I think the Jets have missed him since he left.

It might be fun for Yankees fans to watch their team make a rare trip to Wrigley Field, but SI’s Richard Rothschild believes it’s time for a new ballpark for the Cubs. As a matter of fact, he asks “do the Cubs view themselves more as a tourist attraction than a contending major league ball club?” I have never been to Wrigley, but those that have rave about the ballpark. If your team hasn’t won in 100 years, perhaps being the league’s “tourist attraction” isn’t a bad thing. They can make up a banner similar to what the old Charlotte Hornets did during their existence. In 1993, the Hornets led the NBA in attendance, and created a banner touting the fact. The Cubs could put a pennant out in centerfield calling themselves the “tourist champions” of MLB. I wouldn’t plan on using the restroom though, as it may be the most outdated part of the ballpark.

One last  thing… Peter Gammons, a known Red Sox apologist, called Wrigley a “dump,” did he feel the same way about Fenway before its renovation?

I haven’t watched wrestling since the late eighties (my favorite character was Curt Henning aka Mr. Perfect), but there was a rumor going abound that WrestleMania 30 will happen at Yankee Stadium.

I can’t buy for a second that Phillips would sand bag the Wilpons, let alone to someone’s “boy” on the street.

Phillips has always been a seal clapping caddie.
