Seaver Anniversary Today, Watch His Cincy Return

By Mike Silva ~ June 15th, 2011. Filed under: NY Baseball Memories.

Mets Police reminds us that 34 years ago today Tom Seaver was deal by the Mets to the Cincinnati Reds for Doug Flynn, Steve Henderson, Pat Zachry, and Dan Norman.

He would return to Shea Stadium on August 21st of that season, strike out 11, toss a complete game, and beat the Mets 5-1. Jerry Koosman would oppose Seaver and take the loss. Check out  video (no sound) of that event at YouTube.

A few years back I spoke to Zachry about his career and the trade to the Mets which you could download here.

The trade and seeing Seaver in a Reds’ uniform were heartbreakingly sad, sad days for me. What infuriated me more was Jerry Koosman having to endure a 20 loss season as a result and losing to Seaver upon his return game to Shea.

To forever commemorate the occasion and remind the Mets, on a DAILY basis….that day will never be forgiven, my brick at Citi Field says, “1977 Still Hurts!”

The turning point year in NY baseball – 1977. Reggie comes to town, Seaver leaves. The Yankees actually outdrew the Mets in 1976 when they opened the new Yankee Stadium and won the AL pennant, but the Mets were still 86-76 and drew well. ’77 was really when the two teams started going in opposite directions. The Mets outdrew the Yankees 21 of 29 seasons from 1964 to 1992; the eight years they didn’t came in a single block of 1976-83.
