Jeter Injury An Opportunity

By Mike Silva ~ June 14th, 2011. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

It appears that Derek Jeter might miss some time with a calf injury. Although this puts a crimp in the quest for 3,000, it’s a great opportunity to see Eduardo Nunez play every day at the big league level.

Jeter is putting up his second consecutive below league average season. His offense continues to decline, and he continues to demonstrate poor range at shortstop. If there is one veteran in the lineup the Yankees could live without over an extended period of time, it’s Jeter.

On Saturday night, a scout told me he believes Eduardo Nunez would be starting for a large majority of clubs. He certainly can’t hit much worse than Jeter (2/20/.259), and his defense is at least the equivalent. Remember, the Yankees passed on Cliff Lee because of their refusal to include Nunez in the deal.

The injury to Jeter is beneficial in a couple of ways. First, you get to see if you have your “shortstop of the future” in Nunez. This injury is an early sign that Jeter is going to be missing some time during his contract. The days of 155+ Jeter games at short are nearing an end. Also, if they are going to acquire an arm this year, it’s hard to imagine Nunez not being one of the positional players in the deal. A good stretch will increase his value and help the Yankees in the trade market.

Either way, it’s not the end of the world to lose Jeter. It actually could be a benefit them long term this season.

Agreed Mike. Perhaps the injuries and poor play by key contributors (looking at you Swisher) will open up doors for contributions from unlikely sources and prospects a la Cano and Wang in 2005. Would be nice to see them bring up Montero and see him, Nunez, and Noesi give them a boost of youth.
