Mets Gamble on Brandon Nimmo

By Mike Silva ~ June 6th, 2011. Filed under: MLB Draft Coverage.

The draft is a crapshoot, but the Mets surprised all the pundits by drafting a bat with the 13th pick. Brandon Nimmo is a high school outfielder from Cheyenne, Wyoming. He bats and throws left handed. His school didn’t even have a baseball team so he had to play American Legion ball. Nimmo actually practices in his barn that is equipped with a batting cage and pitching machine. This is a historic pick since no Wyoming high school player has ever been picked higher than the 6th round. That last one happened in 1966.

John Klima of Baseball Beginnings gave a brief report based on video observations. He calls Nimmo “lean, loose, wiry, and athletic.” He also points out that he possesses the two “money tools” in speed and power. Nimmo is a good runner, solid defensively, and has an adequate arm.

Last season for Post 6, Nimmo hit .448 (95-212) with 23 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs and 84 RBI in 70 games, 69 starts. He was a perfect 34-34 in stolen base attempts, helping Post 6 to a 64-12 record. He does have an injury history as he tore his right ACL playing football in 2009.

He also has a commitment to the University of Arkansas.

Jon Heyman compared Nimmo to Rocco Baldelli. SB Nation’s Crawfish Boxes Blog likened Nimmo to Curtis Granderson.

Tim Bontemps of the NY Post says Nimmo is looking for a $2.5 million dollar signing bonus.

I really don’t know what to say about the pick. Personally, I would have liked to see a pitcher drafted, but I am not a talent evaluator. Paul DePodesta summed it up best by saying “”we (the Mets) weren’t interested in making the safest pick. We were interested in the pick that could have the most impact.” Let’s see how the experts rate the entire Mets draft before we pass any judgment.

I’m happy with what the Mets did tonight. They, meaning the new Front Office, showed that they were not going to pick safe. While there’s certainly risk in taking Nimmo and Fulmer at 13 and 44 out of high school, they are high ceiling picks. While the Minaya f/o certainly added some talent via the draft, they never really picked any high ceiling players (though Ike Davis may end up being better than advertised). If Nimmo reaches his ceiling he becomes the best OF prospect in the system. And Fulmer has a high ceiling arm as well. And these 2 are not going to be particularly easy either. Ironically, both are committed to Arkansas, meaning they will require big money to forgo college. Obviously, Alderson and Co. intend to spend the money to get these guys signed.

Throwing inside a barn? Shades of Jerry Koosman.
