Curry Clarifies “15 Seed” Comment

By Mike Silva ~ May 21st, 2011. Filed under: Sports Media Commentary.

Update: 9:00 PM

I spoke to Jack Curry about his comments last night. Apparently, Raissman’s reporting of this was skewed. Curry told me “with the Mets starting 4 players who opened the year at Class AAA and the Yankees starting 8 All-Stars, I said the talent comparison was like a 15 vs. 2 seed. When you leave the first part of the statement out, as Raissman did in his misreporting, my comments come out sounding a lot different.”

I never thought Curry was purposefully slighting the Mets. It was more about having fun with how hard the Yankees announcers take losses, especially to the Mets. This is more directed towards Kay, and when talking about WCBS, Waldman and Sterling. As I told Jack, he does an outstanding job in his role as sideline reporter, and to date has been nothing but fair and balanced. Unfortunately, the reputation of YES is one where most viewers expect Yankee-skewed analysis. It’s something the network created, and the staff will have to work twice as hard to overcome it.

Bob Raissman of the Daily News reported on Twitter last night that YES analyst Jack Curry compared the Mets 2-1 win over the Yankees to a “15 seed beating a number 2 seed” in the NCAA tournament.

The folks over at Al-Yankzeera never take losing well, especially when it’s to the cross-town Mets. Curry, formerly of the New York Times, is one of the best reporters in the business. He is not your typical “peaches and cream” type of sideline reporter. Apparently, the YES gulag has started to work their “pinstriped colored magic” on him as well.

Seriously, it’s not a bad analogy, but the “Buffalo Mets” actually do have some talent that, in my opinion, deserves 8 or 9 seed status. No?

As for the Yanks, a two seed is a bit high for them right now. Maybe a 4 at best? Thoughts?

The basketball reference is apropos because these “experts” never seem to grasp the concept that it’s baseball and any team can beat the life out of any other team at any given time.

The arrogance of Yankee Nation never fails to amaze me.

“The arrogance of Yankee Nation never fails to amaze me.”

First off, it’s Yankees Universe, so get it right. Secondly, Curry is part of YES, not the fans or the so-called Yankees Nation of which you speak. Two totaly different enitites. Ask anyone who has any knowledge of the Yankees history and they will tell you that the Yankees have always historically had problems with Terry Collins led teams.

Stu, I know you hate arrogant fans, especially arrogant Yankees fans, but the majority of the older Yankees fans are not arrogant, at least the ones I know. TERRY COLLINS IS A GOOD MANAGER AND SHOULD BE RESPECTED, PERIOD.

Perhaps Mr. Curry is suffering with a case of Stockholm Syndrome?
