Byrdak Has an Opt Out As Well

By Mike Silva ~ March 24th, 2011. Filed under: New York Mets.

Update March 25th: With Byrdak added to the 40 man roster that brings the Mets to 39 players, plus K-Rod who is on the restricted list. Essentially 40 players since he will be added opening day. That means there are two players that have to be added if Isringhausen/Boyer and Willie Harris are added to the roster. My guess is the Mets will try and trade Luis Hernandez and Manny Acosta in the next week. The fact that Paulino is suspended for 8 games may give them a grace period where they can have 41 players on the 40 man roster, but that won’t last much past the first week of the season.

There has been talk about Blaine Boyer‘s opt out changing the Mets bullpen dynamic, but there is another reliever with an opt out clause.

Lefty Tim Byrdak is on a minor league deal that has an opt out date of March 25th. If he’s not added to the 40 man roster in the next 24 hours he could ask for his release. Since Byrdak has looked good this spring (no runs in 8.1 innings with 6 strikeouts), he would have no trouble finding another club.

It’s hard to imagine the Mets passing on Byrdak, but their 40 man roster situation is still very tight. Right now there are 38 players on the 40 man roster, and Francisco Rodriguez who is on the inactive list, which really makes it 39. If Boyer, Willie Harris, and Byrdak are to make the team, as many report, there would have to be another two spots opened up. This doesn’t include Jason Isringhausen, who could possibly make the team and would need a spot as well. In total the Mets could potentially need four roster spots. Also remember that by placing Johan Santana on the 60 day disabled list another roster spot would open up.

Right now Byrdak has the first opt out of that group. I can’t see the Mets not taking him north, but it appears they will have to make a decision sooner rather than later.

Losing Byrdak would be a huge blow to the bullpen. Especially considering the only lefty reliever currently on the 40 man is Pat Misch, who we all know profiles more as a starter/long reliever. If you are thinking Mike O’Connor he is also on a minor league deal and would have to be added to the 40 man as well.
