Why The 2B Winner Might Be Temporary

If he stays healthy. I like him. 26 HR, 80 BB in 152 pro games. @thosebackpages: will Reese Havens ever play everyday ML baseball? #Metsless than a minute ago via HootSuite

I saw Havens play last year in Binghamton before he was injured. He clearly can hit, as Jim Callis of Baseball America points out above, and his numbers are similar to another offensive minded second baseman that played for the Mets called Jeff Kent.

Havens profiles as someone that could hit .280, with 15-20 homers, and 80 RBI. If not for the various injuries he would be in the conversation for second base. He probably would have received a call up last season. Take a look at his MILB numbers to date:

That’s why whomever wins the second base job – Brad Emaus, Luis Hernandez, Dan Murphy, and even Luis Castillo- might just be a temporary stopgap anyway.

Havens probably will start the year with Wally Backman at Double-A Binghamton. Don’t be surprised if he stays healthy and progresses if he ascends all the way to the big league club, especially if the aforementioned candidates don’t produce.

I also expect big things from Havens this year because he will be under the tutelege of Wally Backman who was instrumental in the development of big leaguers such as Dan Uggla, Carlos Quentin, and Aaron Rowand.

I like Havens too. He’s a hard nosed grinder which is the type of player Backman loves. Those two should hit it off great in AA. The question, of course, is can he stay healthy. The Mets have to make sure he stays healthy and on the field. Maybe Haven’s injuries have been a run of bad luck and now he’ll stay healthy. As a Mets fan it’s incredibly frustrating to see two very talented young hitters lose so much development time to injuries (F. Martinez being the other to which I refer). It’s about time that changed for us, don’t you think?

Luis Hernandez is a awful hitter only you would like him Silva.

Kinda reminds you of Fernando Martinez? Let’s wait until he has 300 good ABs in Double A before we have him hitting 280 with 15 homers in the bigs.

Backman is going to be huge in player development this year in Bingo. I predict Havens will flourish under him.

Fire Jerry, as for you, Luis Hernandez is the best defensive 2b on the club. I value defense at the position. I think the Mets offense can survive his bat, which wasn’t that bad last year.

F-Mart has never had a season like Duda did last year. That’s been my issue with F-Mart, all tools no production. At least Duda has finally, even for one year, shown his tools can translate to the field.
