Pearlman Discusses HOF Vote, Bagwell, Piazza on Radio

By Mike Silva ~ January 10th, 2011. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Last night, Jeff Pearlman of Sports Illustrated joined me to discuss his controversial comments regarding steroids and Jeff Bagwell.

One of the points that Jeff made, and I agree with, is how MLB hasn’t provided direction on potential PED users in the Hall of Fame like they have with Pete Rose and the Black Sox.

Instead of debating the “morality” of factoring PED use into the vote, I believe Bud Selig should rule that only “on the field” accomplishments should be considered for players suspected of steroid use. There still will be individuals that probably won’t vote for certain players, but at least it gives direction instead of leaving it to “slippery slope” of morality that is employed by a large percentage of the BBWAA.

I also brought up the accusations about Mike Piazza and steroids, citing some reasons why it could be possible that Piazza is not a user. Jeff again believes that Piazza did “more than just Androstenedione, legal in the nineties, and said, in his opinion, that the thought a case for Piazza being clean is “laughable.”

For the record, Pearlman reiterated his position on Jeff Bagwell saying he was “so certain he used steroids from being around that team, era, and researching his Clemens book.” He would go on to tell me that if Bagwell didn’t use then the “world is flat.”When I asked him if Craig Biggio falls into the same category as Bagwell because he played for Houston, a team that he said earlier in the show was hotbed for PED use, he said yes.

A great show all around, as we discussed the MLB International Market with lawyer Jason Browning of Pinstripe Defection during the first half hour, and the steroid issue with Jeff Pearlman during the back half.

Jeff Pearlman has to provide better evidence than vague references to having spent time researching Roger Clemens. On the subject of steroids, that book didn’t uncover anything memorable about Clemens himself, let alone the rest of the Astros, so Pearlman should either reveal what he held back then or quit acting like some imaginary facts give him credibility on the subject of steroids and the Astros. He is a poser.

As I pointed out on Mr. Pearlman’s website, he is a testament to Senator Joe McCarthy’s style of accusation and taint. Did Mr. Pearlman repeat his “failure to squeal” rationale for excluding Mr. Bagwell?

Reading his blog about Bagwell, Pearlman sounds like an angry, know-nothing blowhard.

But perhaps you can address something that I’ve long wondered about, Mike. In our age of electronic media, why is voting for the HOF and postseason awards still limited to a small number of BBWAA newspaper writers? For example, why don’t broadcasters like Tim McCarver and other non-writers have votes? They’re just as knowledgeable, and an expanded voter pool presumably would produce a higher-quality result, since the impact of each subjective view would be minimized.

What say does Bud Selig have in this? Major League Baseball does not have authority over the Baseball Hall of Fame. Similarly, MLB has not provided any direction whatsoever regarding Pete Rose and the Black Sox. Their ineligibility comes solely from the Hall the Fame.
