An Andruw Jones/Curtis Granderson Platoon

By Mike Silva ~ January 8th, 2011. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

The Yankees interest in Andruw Jones certainly won’t completely make up for the “Cliff Lee Hangover,” but Jones might be a nice complementary player in their lineup.

Jones is no longer the player that put up near Hall of Fame numbers for Bobby Cox in Atlanta, especially defensively, but his bat still has interesting life.

One of my criticisms of Curtis Granderson is his anemic production against left handed pitchers. Although he worked with Kevin Long last year, Granderson still hit only .234 with 4 homers and 12 RBI, and OPS of only .647. On the other hand, Jones had a .931 OPS against left handed pitching, with 8 homers and 23 RBI.

The downgrade in defense from Granderson is significant, but they could slide Gardner to center, and Jones to left to shore it up. Jones would also allow Joe Girardi to pinch hit for either of them late in a game when the opposition brings in a tough LOOGY.

Right now the Yankees outfield will feature two left handed bats (Gardner, Granderson), so a right handed bat like Jones would be a welcome addition.

This would be a solid move for Brian Cashman, with more upside than some of the veterans brought onboard in recent years.

Which is why Cashman won’t sign him

@Christopher Masiello: I want some of what you’re smoking! A .256 lifetime hitter like Jones doesn’t belong anywhere near the Hall of Fame.
