George Steinbrenner Named 2010 NYBD “Man Of The Year”

By Mike Silva ~ January 3rd, 2011. Filed under: Man of the Year.

As announced on last nights show NYBD readers elected George Steinbrenner as the first annual “NYBD Man of the Year.”

In case you are just tuning in, I decided to start a tradition by selecting individuals or events that impacted New York sports throughout the previous year. The inaugural choices were George Steinbrenner, Sandy Alderson, Cliff Lee, and Derek Jeter. You could read about their candidacy here

The final vote tallies were:

George Steinbrenner: 42%

Sandy Alderson: 30%

Cliff Lee: 18%

Derek Jeter: 10%

So there you have it, the first annual NYBD “Man of the Year” is George Steinbrenner.

I don’t get the Alderson inclusion.

He did nothing but get hired. Then he did nothing.

The “Man of the Year” is also an event. The fact the Mets hired Alderson and the All Star Front Office is certainly a big news story for the year IMO. Apparently 30% of the fans agree, although I personally would have voted for Cliff Lee.

@Russ: By your logic, Steinbrenner shouldn’t have been included either. He did nothing but be ill and die. Then he did nothing.

Yeah, but you can look at George for a lifetime achievement tribute, even though, I’m not sure I would pick him either.

As for Alderson goes, he didn’t do anything (yet). If anyone deserves credit for him, it should be the Mets’ ownership for recognizing that an organizational reboot is necessary and then finding a solid guy to head it then paying the money to bring in “name” guys to fill out the front office. I could see nominating him if he came in and cleaned house with a bunch of bold, inspired moves I could see it but he didn’t do anything

If you want to base it solely in merit, then the 2010 NY Baseball Man of the Year is Robinson Cano.
