Mets Fans Want To See Canseco in Spring Training

By Mike Silva ~ December 28th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Mets.

A couple of weeks ago Jose Canseco was lobbying for a spring training invite on Twitter, and even called out Mets GM Sandy Alderson, saying that he would even play first base for a tryout. Canseco claims he can still lead the league in homers if given the opportunity.

For fun, I decided to throw the question out to fellow Mets fans and ask: Should the Mets bring Jose Canseco to Spring Training?

84% of those that responded, and it was a decent amount of votes, said they would like the Mets to bring the former Bash Brother to Port St. Lucie.

I am shocked by this result. So is this what happens in a slow offseason, or do the fans believe Canseco still has something left? Is this a sign of the baseball apocalypse?

The good news is that Jose is signing a movie deal, and we will get to learn more about this interesting character in the near future.

So Sandy, it’s your move. Will you bring Jose Canseco to Spring Training as a non roster invitee?

I missed your survey but I would have voted no. I believe it was Joe Janish who brought up this idea at his blog a few weeks ago and I (politely) informed him I thought it was one of the dumbest things he’d ever put forth.

Canseco is 46 years old and hasn’t played in the majors in a decade. The idea is ludicrous and 84% of your respondents are apparently more interested in sideshows than baseball. May I recommend to them The Greatest Show On Earth which will be at Nassau Coliseum this March.

I’m a Mets fan, and I have zero desire to see Canseco in spring training. The problem with a poll like that is that a lot of people don’t take it seriously. If you asked people if they would like to see Willie Mays at 79 or Duke Snider at 84 get a tryout, my guess is that at least 20-25% would say yes.
